We’ve all heard of St. Valentine’s Day, the day of love celebrated around the world. But in South Korea, Valentine’s Day is for the men. Girls show their love, with presents to their sweetheart. One month later the tables turn.
[Myungsoo Park, Confectionary Maker]:
“White Day, on the 14th of March, is the day men give candy to women.”
This year comes a special token of love inspired by the Korean soapie “Dream High” – a lollypop similar to one given to the main character.
Other common gifts are teddy bears, chocolate and lingerie. Some couples go all out with matching t-shirts.
[Youngjun Kim, White Day Boyfriend]:
“I bought some couple T-shirts from an Internet shopping website, and gave her those with some candy. And I wrote my girlfriend a letter.”
But what happens if you don’t get any presents? There’s another day, called “Black Day.”
[Youngjun Kim, White Day Boyfriend]:
“If you don’t get anything for Valentines Day or White Day, you go and eat black bean noodles and console each other with other singles.”
Black Day falls on April 14th.
